Clashes Between Armed Groups Force 70 Civilians to Evacuate in Mamasapano

Mamasapano, Maguindanao del Sur – Tensions flared anew as fighting erupted between two private armed groups in the town of Mamasapano, forcing at least 70 civilians to evacuate for safety.

According to the Mamasapano Police, the confrontation involved the groups of Ben Tikao and Ustadz Guiahod. The clash occurred at the boundary of Tukanalipao and Pimbalkan, starting at around 11 a.m. yesterday and lasting until 2 p.m.

Local authorities, including the Mamasapano local government unit (LGU), intervened, leading to the cessation of hostilities. Police Senior Master Sergeant Paul Chrislim Dollosa, Officer-in-Charge of the Mamasapano Police, revealed in a radio interview with DXMS Radyo Bida that the altercation stemmed from unresolved disputes between the two factions.

This is the second recorded instance of violence between these groups, raising concerns among residents. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported during the exchange of gunfire.

The Mamasapano LGU, together with the police and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), has vowed to intensify efforts to ensure the safety of residents and prevent further clashes.

Evacuees, mostly from the affected barangays, are currently seeking temporary shelter in nearby areas. Local leaders are coordinating assistance and monitoring the situation closely to avoid an escalation.

Authorities urge the warring factions to resolve their disputes through dialogue to avoid further disruption to the lives of civilians in the area.
