The House of Representatives has formally invited former President Rodrigo Duterte to attend a Joint Committee Meeting on October 22, 2024, focusing on the controversial issue of extra-judicial killings (EJKs) linked to the country’s war on drugs. The meeting is scheduled for 9:30 AM at the People’s Center Building in Quezon City.
The invitation, signed by Congressman Robert Ace Barbers, Chairperson of the Committee on Dangerous Drugs, has been sent to Duterte’s residence in Davao City, with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) tasked with ensuring its delivery. CIDG Chief PBGen Nicholas Torre III has also been informed of the need to confirm Duterte’s receipt of the letter.
The upcoming meeting seeks to address critical issues regarding EJKs that allegedly occurred during Duterte’s administration, particularly in relation to his aggressive anti-drug campaign. Duterte’s war on drugs, which began in 2016, was marked by a surge in police operations and resulted in the deaths of thousands of suspected drug offenders. While the Duterte administration consistently defended the campaign as a necessary measure to curb rampant drug problems, human rights organizations both locally and internationally criticized it, alleging widespread human rights violations and unaccounted killings.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) and other global bodies have also scrutinized the Philippine government’s actions during Duterte’s tenure, which drew attention to potential extrajudicial executions of suspected criminals. Despite the controversies, Duterte maintained popular support during his presidency, with many Filipinos believing that the campaign brought more safety and order to their communities.
As the investigation into EJKs continues under the new administration, the Joint Committee Meeting will be an essential platform for clarifying issues related to Duterte’s anti-drug operations. This invitation represents an opportunity for Duterte to address accusations and shed light on the decisions and policies implemented during his six-year term.
The House committee has emphasized its goal to resolve ongoing concerns regarding accountability in the war on drugs, while considering the broader implications of Duterte’s policies on national law enforcement practices and human rights. All eyes are now on the former president, as the nation awaits his response to this crucial hearing.
