Mlang, Cotabato – October 19, 2024
A resident was killed and four others wounded, including two soldiers, when a drunken barangay official went on a shooting spree at a chicken barbecue stall in Barangay Bagontapay, Mlang, Cotabato, shortly after midnight on Saturday.
The suspect, identified as Ivan Roy Macantan, a barangay captain and candidate for councilor in Mlang, opened fire on civilians after reportedly becoming intoxicated. The violence resulted in the immediate death of Romnick Reyes, who was shot multiple times. Four others were injured: off-duty Army personnel Gilbert Dasig and Rollen Jay Duron, and civilians Jomer Lumugda and Rosinda Macailing.
Witnesses described the chaotic scene, with Macantan firing indiscriminately at people along a busy street. Macantan and three accomplices fled the scene and are now being sought by local authorities.
Provincial officials, as well as local government leaders in Cotabato, condemned the incident, emphasizing that Macantan has a long-standing reputation for arrogance and aggression when drunk. Mlang police, under the direction of Brig. Gen. James Gulmatico, have been ordered to prioritize the arrest of the suspect and ensure he faces charges.
As authorities continue their manhunt, investigators are gathering testimonies to ensure that all individuals responsible for the violence are held accountable.
The incident has sparked outrage across the province, with residents demanding justice for the victims and stricter measures to address gun violence in local communities.
