Clearing Operations Underway in Iligan City Following Typhoon Kristine’s Aftermath

Iligan City, October 25, 2024

Iligan City is undertaking extensive clearing operations in response to strong winds and heavy rains from Typhoon Kristine, which struck the area around 1 p.m. today, causing trees and electric poles to fall and blocking major roads. The Iligan City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (ICDRRMO), in coordination with private individuals and local teams, has been working around the clock to clear debris, repair power lines, and restore accessibility in affected neighborhoods.

City Mayor Fred Siao acknowledged the swift response efforts by the ICDRRMO and other city departments, including the City Engineer’s Office, and thanked the public for their patience and cooperation during the ongoing cleanup. “Our team is working tirelessly to address blocked roads and assist affected areas as quickly as possible,” Mayor Siao said. He urged residents to remain vigilant, stay updated on advisories, and follow safety protocols.

One significant incident occurred at the Iligan City Public Plaza, where a large tree fell and snapped power lines. The City Engineer’s Office has since deployed its Technical Maintenance Section to repair these lines and prevent prolonged power outages. Additionally, the Philippine Red Cross-Iligan City Chapter, led by Team Leader Philip James Paras, has dispatched volunteers to assist in clearing operations in Barangays Del Carmen and Hinaplanon, ensuring roads are accessible for emergency response vehicles and local residents.

ICDRRMO’s official statement acknowledged the inconvenience faced by the community and reiterated its commitment to prioritize critical areas. “We ask for patience and cooperation as we continue clearing roads and supporting affected communities. Thank you for your understanding and support,” the ICDRRMO expressed.

As Typhoon Kristine exits the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), the ICDRRMO encourages all residents to remain cautious, particularly in areas with fallen branches or ongoing repairs. The local government reminds everyone to stay informed, observe safety guidelines, and be prepared for any further changes in weather conditions.
