TIPO-TIPO, Basilan — A military assessment is pointing to a possible retaliatory attack as the motive behind the ambush of a Philippine Army convoy in Tipo-Tipo, Basilan, on October 5, with authorities investigating a possible connection to a recent armed encounter in Lamitan City that left a wanted murder suspect dead.

The convoy was ambushed by unidentified armed men at around 7:45 a.m. on October 5 while troops of the 45th Infantry Battalion were passing through Sitio Bauno Dagao, Barangay Badja, Tipo-Tipo.

Initial reports said several government personnel were wounded in the attack. The latest information from authorities confirms that military personnel sustained injuries and were immediately evacuated for medical treatment. The wounded included personnel from the 45th Infantry Battalion, 113th Regional Defense Center, 14th Cavalry, and a Civilian Armed Auxiliary.

The Joint Task Force Orion confirmed that personnel of the 45th Infantry Battalion came under armed attack while traversing a road in Barangay Badja at about 7:45 a.m.

According to JTF Orion, some military personnel were wounded during the incident and were immediately evacuated to a medical facility. Reinforcements were also promptly deployed to strengthen security in the area and prevent further threats to the troops and nearby communities.

Military examines possible retaliation

The military’s initial investigation is examining the possibility that the ambush was carried out as retaliation for a recent military operation in Barangay Baimbing, Lamitan City, where an armed encounter took place.

According to the initial assessment, the attack may have been connected to the death of Nermalyn Musa y Salapuddin, who was killed during the September 29 operation while authorities were serving warrants of arrest against her and her husband, Saddam Siddick.

Musa was wanted on three counts of murder, according to the police account of the operation. Authorities said she allegedly engaged the operating team in an armed confrontation after allegedly throwing grenades and firing at personnel serving the warrants. She was subsequently brought to Lamitan District Hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.

Siddick, who police had described as Basilan’s No. 1 most wanted person, reportedly escaped during the operation.

Police said Musa was a suspected former member of the Dawlah Islamiyah–Abu Sayyaf Group (DI-ASG) and linked her to a previous ambush in Baimbing that killed three personnel of the Army’s 9th Intelligence Service Unit. These affiliations and alleged links remain matters based on law enforcement records and allegations contained in the police report.

The military’s current assessment reportedly points to an armed group allegedly led by Siddick as being behind the Tipo-Tipo ambush. However, authorities have emphasized that the investigation is continuing and that the motive and identities of those responsible have yet to be conclusively established.

Security forces reinforce area

Following the attack, reinforcements were deployed to strengthen security around the area and prevent further threats against military personnel and civilians.

JTF Orion said appropriate security measures were being undertaken in coordination with concerned military units and authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding the ambush and hold those responsible accountable. The task force also appealed to the public to remain calm and avoid circulating unverified information that could cause unnecessary alarm or interfere with ongoing security operations.

Tipo-Tipo Mayor Arcam P. Istarul strongly condemned the attack, calling it a treacherous ambush and expressing solidarity with the wounded soldiers and their families. He urged law enforcement and security authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and bring those responsible to justice.

Governor Hataman calls for calm and justice

Basilan Governor Mujiv Hataman also condemned the attack and called for a thorough and impartial investigation.

Hataman said the wounded soldiers and their families have his support and called for their swift recovery. He urged residents to remain calm while allowing security and law enforcement authorities to establish the facts surrounding the incident.

The governor also called for those responsible to be identified, apprehended and brought to justice, while urging security forces to pursue the perpetrators firmly but with restraint to protect civilians and communities.

Earlier, Hataman led a coordination meeting involving military officials, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and local government officials following the Tipo-Tipo incident.

The meeting at the Basilan Government Center in Lamitan City brought together Provincial Negotiator Al-Rasheed Sakkalahul, Basilan Police Chief PCol Edison Dumangas, BGen Frederick M. Sales of the 1101st Infantry Brigade, MILF commanders, Al-Barka Vice Mayor Mar Tokong and Tipo-Tipo Mayor Istarul.

The participants discussed security and coordination measures and the need for an immediate pursuit of those responsible for the attack.

Investigation continues

The Tipo-Tipo ambush comes less than a week after the deadly September 29 law enforcement operation in Barangay Baimbing, where authorities were serving three murder warrants against Musa and Siddick.

That operation involved the CIDG BASULTA Police Field Unit–Basilan Team, Lamitan City Police Station and other participating law enforcement and military units. Police reported recovering a carbine rifle, ammunition, two M16 magazines, a drone and an unexploded hand grenade following the encounter.

Authorities have yet to conclusively establish whether the same armed network was responsible for the October 5 ambush. The reported retaliatory motive and alleged involvement of Siddick’s group remain part of the ongoing investigation.

For now, security forces remain on alert in Basilan as authorities work to identify the attackers, determine the circumstances of the ambush and prevent further violence in affected communities.

Officials are also appealing to residents to remain calm and vigilant as military and law enforcement operations continue.
