MATANOG, Maguindanao del Norte — Authorities seized an estimated ₱12.4 million worth of suspected smuggled cigarettes and arrested two men after intercepting a wing-van truck during a joint checkpoint operation in Sitio Marayag, Barangay Bayanga Norte, Matanog, Maguindanao del Norte, early Tuesday morning, August 18, 2026.

Arrested were Arniel L. Alegarbes, 55, the driver of the vehicle, and his helper, Jaytonie Isidro, 23, authorities said.
The operation was conducted at around 5 a.m. when personnel manning the joint checkpoint reportedly noticed several master cases of cigarettes inside the truck.
The authorities then inspected the vehicle and its cargo. During the inspection, Alegarbes allegedly failed to present the required documents covering the transportation and ownership of the cigarette shipment.
This prompted authorities to take the vehicle and its cargo into custody for further verification and investigation.
A total of 290 master cases, equivalent to approximately 14,497 reams, of suspected smuggled cigarettes were recovered from the truck.
The seized cigarettes consisted of the brands Greenhill and Bosqu, with an estimated total value of ₱12,409,000, based on the initial assessment of authorities.
The volume and estimated value of the shipment underscore the scale of the suspected smuggling operation, although authorities have yet to establish the exact source of the cigarettes and their intended destination.
The two suspects are now under the custody of the Matanog Municipal Police Station (Matanog MPS) along with the intercepted vehicle and seized cargo.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine where the cigarettes originated, where they were supposed to be delivered, and whether other individuals or groups were involved in the transportation and distribution of the suspected contraband.
Investigators are also expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the shipment and verify the ownership and documentation of the seized cigarettes as the case progresses.
The seizure forms part of continuing law enforcement efforts against the movement of untaxed and illegally imported tobacco products in Mindanao, where authorities have repeatedly intercepted large shipments of suspected smuggled cigarettes being transported by land and sea.
The suspects remain subject to the legal process, and the allegations against them have yet to be resolved in court.
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing.
