Lamitan City, Basilan | July 31, 2025 — In a powerful demonstration of inclusive and participatory leadership, the Provincial Government of Basilan convened a meaningful “Listening Session” with the Basilan Council of Elders at the Taguine Hall of the Basilan People’s Capitol in Lamitan City.

Anchored on the theme “Ang tunay na pamumuno, marunong makinig,” the gathering brought together local leaders, security officials, civil society representatives, and traditional elders to discuss strategies for peace, development, and responsible governance under the province’s vision of a #BagongBasilan.

Governor Mujiv S. Hataman led the session, underscoring the significance of the mashuara, a time-honored tradition of consultation among elders in the Bangsamoro culture, ensuring that the province’s direction is grounded in the wisdom and experience of its senior leaders.

“The voices of those who have long served our communities must not only be heard, but valued,” said Gov. Hataman during the opening of the session.

Among the attendees were Colonel Frederick B. Sales, Acting Commander of the 101st Infantry (Three Red Arrows) Brigade, along with key military leaders such as Lieutenant Colonel Roldan P. Mira of the 6th Special Forces Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Anthony C. Caro of the 18th Infantry Battalion, and Lieutenant Colonel Edmond S. Lanzar of the 32nd Infantry Battalion. Colonel Sales reaffirmed the Philippine Army’s steadfast support to local peace and development initiatives in Basilan.

Also present were Police Colonel Cerrazid Umabong of the Basilan Provincial Police Office (BPPO), Dr. Aboulkhair Tarazon of the Basilan Ulama Supreme Council, and Professor Noreen Pallong of Maluso, who all shared valuable insights during the discussions.

Dr. Alzad Sattar led the discussion on the objectives of the meeting, while former Maluso Mayor Hanie Bud served as facilitator. Isabela City Mayor Dadah Turabin-Hataman also attended the event as an observer, further emphasizing the shared commitment of local governments to inclusive dialogue.

The session marks another milestone in Basilan’s pursuit of good governance through meaningful consultations with traditional and community leaders, proving that true leadership listens, learns, and leads with compassion and integrity.
