CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Conflicting accounts surrounding an incident involving students of Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School (MOGCHS) along Capistrano Street on September 30, 2026, have raised concerns about student safety, prompting the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (COCPO) to issue a clarification disputing initial reports of a robbery and assault.

Initial accounts circulating about the incident claimed that six Grade 10 students were allegedly surrounded by nearly 15 hooded individuals while walking along Capistrano Street near Cosmopolitan at around 7 p.m. The reports alleged that the students were threatened with an ice pick, punched and robbed of their belongings.
According to these initial accounts, four bags were taken, two of which were reportedly returned later, while two mobile phones were allegedly taken by the group. A separate report also claimed that another student, who was not part of the six, had been stabbed in the same area.
However, the COCPO subsequently issued an official clarification stating that its investigation found no robbery and no involvement of bladed weapons. Police described the incident as a verbal confrontation between two groups of students, with one group reportedly outnumbered and leaving the scene, abandoning their belongings.
Police Station 1 personnel responded immediately and recovered the belongings left at the scene, which were subsequently returned to the students, according to the police statement.
The COCPO also said that the minors involved were released to their parents’ custody after the appropriate procedures had been completed.
The police clarification directly contradicts key allegations in the initial reports, particularly claims of a robbery, physical assault involving a weapon and the theft of mobile phones. The separate allegation concerning a student reportedly stabbed in the area was not addressed in the clarification provided.
The differing accounts underscore the importance of establishing the circumstances of the confrontation and distinguishing verified police findings from information circulating on social media.
The COCPO urged the public to rely on official updates and reaffirmed its commitment to student safety in the city.
For parents and the school community, the incident remains a reminder of the importance of monitoring student safety, particularly when young people are traveling home in the evening, while avoiding the spread of unverified allegations involving minors.
