KALILANGAN, Bukidnon — Authorities intercepted ₱320,000 worth of suspected smuggled cigarettes and arrested a 38-year-old driver during a checkpoint operation at the Regional Border Control Point (RBCP) in Barangay Malinao, Kalilangan, Bukidnon on the night of July 8, 2026.

The operation was led by personnel of the 1004th Maneuver Company of the Regional Mobile Force Battalion 10 (RMFB 10) in coordination with the Kalilangan Municipal Police Station, 1003rd Maneuver Company and TSC of RMFB 10, CIDG Bukidnon, and the Misamis Oriental Maritime Police Station.

The suspect was apprehended after authorities flagged down a Toyota Hilux traveling from Madalum, Lanao del Sur to Malaybalay City, Bukidnon.

During the initial inspection, operatives noticed several reams of suspected smuggled cigarettes in the front portion of the vehicle. A more thorough search later uncovered additional cigarette stocks concealed inside an improvised compartment hidden beneath the pickup’s bedliner.

Authorities recovered a total of 400 reams of Red Modern cigarettes that allegedly lacked the required government health warning stickers, a violation that prompted further investigation into the shipment’s origin and legality.

According to the Bureau of Customs’ valuation, the confiscated cigarettes have an estimated market value of ₱320,000. The Toyota Hilux used to transport the contraband was also seized.

An inventory of the evidence was conducted at the scene in the presence of the arrested driver and a barangay official who served as witness, following standard operating procedures.

The suspect was brought to the Kalilangan Municipal Police Station and is facing charges for violation of Republic Act No. 10643, or the Graphic Health Warnings Law. Meanwhile, the confiscated cigarettes and vehicle will be turned over to the Bureau of Customs for proper disposition and further investigation.

Police Regional Office 10 (PRO10) reiterated its call for public cooperation in the campaign against smuggling, urging citizens to immediately report any suspicious transport or sale of contraband products. Authorities said community vigilance remains crucial in protecting government revenue, public health, and the integrity of legitimate trade.

The seizure highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to tighten border controls and curb the movement of illegally imported tobacco products across Northern Mindanao.
