BONGAO, Tawi-Tawi — Authorities intercepted thousands of pesos worth of suspected smuggled cigarettes during a maritime anti-smuggling operation conducted at a mini port in Barangay Poblacion, Bongao, Tawi-Tawi on May 21, 2026.

The operation was carried out by personnel of the Philippine National Police Maritime Group through the Tawi-Tawi Maritime Police Station in coordination with other law enforcement agencies as part of the government’s intensified campaign against illegal trade and smuggling activities in the province.
According to authorities, the operation stemmed from intelligence reports regarding the alleged transport and unloading of contraband cigarettes at the Gabbang-Gabbang Mini Port, also known locally as the Chinese Pier, in Barangay Poblacion.
While conducting a mobile patrol operation in the area, operatives discovered six boxes containing approximately 300 reams of “Hoodlum American Blend” cigarettes stacked near the docking area of the port. Law enforcement personnel immediately attempted to identify the owner or claimant of the goods, but no individual came forward to assume ownership of the seized products.
Initial investigation revealed that the cigarettes were allegedly unloaded from a small motorized boat and were reportedly intended for distribution to local retailers in the area. Authorities suspect that the tobacco products were illegally smuggled into the country in violation of Customs Modernization and Tariff Act, the law that strengthens customs rules and penalties against smuggling and illegal importation.
Based on the assessment of the National Tobacco Authority, the confiscated cigarettes carry an estimated market value of ₱256,710.00, with each ream valued at around ₱85.57 per pack. Officials clarified, however, that the items will still undergo further verification and evaluation by concerned government agencies.
The seized contraband was transported to the Tawi-Tawi Maritime Police Station for proper documentation before being formally turned over to the Bureau of Customs Sub-Port in Bongao for inventory procedures and appropriate disposition.
Authorities emphasized that the successful operation highlights the strengthened coordination among law enforcement agencies in combating smuggling operations, particularly the proliferation of untaxed and illegally imported tobacco products in the southern maritime borders of the country.
The anti-smuggling campaign forms part of the government’s Enhanced Managing Police Operations strategy and aligns with the national police’s reform agenda under the slogan, “Bagong PNP para sa Bagong Pilipinas: Serbisyong Mabilis, Tapat, at Nararamdaman.”
Officials also reiterated their commitment to intensifying maritime border security and cracking down on illegal trade activities that deprive the government of tax revenues and threaten legitimate businesses.
