A newborn baby boy was rescued after being found abandoned inside a woven basket in the municipality of Caraga, raising renewed concern over cases of child abandonment and the desperate situations faced by some families.

According to a report from local authorities, the infant was discovered in Purok Rose, Barangay Poblacion on May 10, 2026. A resident reportedly woke up after hearing loud barking from dogs outside their home, followed by the cries of a baby coming from the area nearby.

When the resident checked the surroundings, the individual was shocked to find a newly born baby boy placed inside and placed inside a “bao-bao” and left alone.

Personnel from the Caraga Municipal Police Station immediately responded to the incident and rushed the infant to the Municipal Health Center for immediate medical attention and assessment.

Authorities said the baby is now under proper care and monitoring while coordination has already been made with the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office to ensure the child’s protection and welfare.

Police have launched an investigation to identify the parents or individuals responsible for abandoning the child. Investigators are also looking into possible witnesses and nearby information that could help trace those involved.

Meanwhile, authorities reminded the public that government agencies and social welfare offices are available to assist parents experiencing severe emotional, financial, or personal difficulties. Officials emphasized that abandoning a child places the infant’s life at serious risk and urged struggling parents to seek help instead of leaving children in dangerous situations.

The incident sparked sympathy and concern among residents, many of whom expressed hope that the infant will recover fully and eventually be placed in a safe and loving environment.
