TALIPAO, Sulu — A long-standing rido or clan feud that has simmered for years in this conflict-prone municipality finally moved toward resolution after a decisive settlement facilitated by the military, police, local government, and former rebel leaders.

On February 27, 2026, the 1103rd Infantry (Kalis) Brigade of the Philippine Army’s 11th Infantry Division, working closely with the 41st Infantry (Partner for Peace) Battalion, the local police, and the municipal government of Talipao, successfully brokered a peaceful settlement between two rival communities involved in a bitter land dispute.

The breakthrough came during a historic conference held at the Sangguniang Bayan Hall, presided over by Vice Mayor Nivocadnezar I. Tulawie, where officials formally presented the ruling on the contested land between Barangay Tiis and Barangay Talipao Proper. The verdict, issued following coordination with the Registry of Deeds and the Office of the Governor of Sulu, declared that the disputed property legally belongs to Barangay Talipao Proper.

The decision was publicly read before all concerned parties in a move aimed at ensuring transparency and due process, a crucial step in preventing further escalation of tensions that have strained relations between the two communities for years.

Tulawie urged both sides to accept the ruling with dignity and maturity, stressing that reconciliation is more important than prolonging hostilities. He highlighted the significance of settling the feud during the holy month of Ramadan, calling it an opportunity for forgiveness and renewed unity among families affected by the conflict.

Support for the settlement also came from Indanan Mayor Albakil Jikiri, who emphasized that after years of tension and uncertainty, the time had come for communities to move forward and focus on healing and cooperation.

Military officials said the agreement marks a major step in addressing the root causes of conflict in the area. Representatives from the Kalis Brigade and the 41st Infantry Battalion warned that unresolved clan feuds often trigger cycles of violence that disrupt livelihoods, delay development projects, and endanger future generations.

The successful mediation also highlighted the role of the Moro National Liberation Front in supporting peace-building efforts alongside government forces and local authorities. Officials described the joint initiative as a strong demonstration of unity among stakeholders determined to stabilize communities historically affected by rido and armed tensions.

Authorities noted that the settlement process was carefully designed to be inclusive and community-centered, ensuring that both sides were heard before the final verdict was presented. By the end of the meeting, both parties formally accepted the ruling, signaling a rare moment of reconciliation in an area long marked by clan-based disputes.

The 1103rd Infantry (Kalis) Brigade reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining peace and stability across Talipao and the wider province, emphasizing continued dialogue, respect for the rule of law, and cooperation among security forces, local leaders, and communities.

Officials described the agreement as more than just a resolution to a land dispute — but a significant step toward lasting peace in Sulu, where ending intergenerational conflicts remains a key challenge for authorities and peace advocates alike.
