MATI CITY, Davao Oriental – Relief swept through Barangay Nangan, Governor Generoso, after seven fishermen who were reported missing returned home safely on September 1, 2025, following nearly two weeks at sea.

The fishermen, all residents of Purok 8, left for a fishing venture aboard the motorized banca MBCA Triple Z (green and white) on August 20, bound for the fishing grounds off Mati City. They were expected to return by August 30 but failed to arrive, prompting fears among their families and neighbors.

According to initial reports, the group encountered mechanical trouble when the propeller rod of their vessel was damaged by heavy waves about 42 miles from shore. Despite the damage, the banca’s engine remained functional, allowing them to slowly navigate their way back to safety. The fishermen reached their community at around 4:00 a.m. on September 1, without any injuries.

Immediately after receiving word of their disappearance, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) through its Coast Guard Station Davao Oriental, in coordination with the Coast Guard Sub-Station Governor Generoso and the High-Speed Response Boat (HSRB-033), launched a full-scale search and rescue operation. A Notice to Mariners (NOTAM) was also issued via official social media platforms, urging the public to report sightings or provide information that could aid in the search.

The PCG said the successful outcome underscored the commitment of its personnel to maritime safety and security, even under difficult sea conditions.

Authorities also reminded all mariners to thoroughly inspect and ensure their vessels are in proper working condition before venturing out to sea. In case of emergencies, immediate reporting to the nearest Coast Guard station is strongly advised.
