Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte – Airport police apprehended a man who breached security and sprinted along Runway 10 of Cotabato Airport early morning on August 23, 2025, raising concerns over the grave dangers such intrusions pose to aircraft operations and passenger safety.

The incident occurred around 6:10 a.m. when airport personnel spotted the individual trespassing in the restricted airside area. Authorities said the man allegedly climbed over the airport’s perimeter fence and was believed to have intended to board a departing commercial aircraft.

When questioned, the suspect reportedly exhibited unusual behavior and failed to respond coherently. Airport police recovered multiple identification cards, ATM cards under different names, and personal belongings from his sling bag. He is now in the custody of the Cotabato Airport Police Station while investigators coordinate with the Philippine Air Force, local officials, and his family to establish his identity and motives.

Aviation security experts warned that runway incursions, whether intentional or accidental, can be catastrophic. An intruder crossing or lingering on an active runway creates the risk of a collision during takeoff or landing—an event that could result in massive loss of lives and damage to aircraft.

PBGen Jay R. Cumigad of the Police Aviation Security Group (AVSEGROUP) lauded the swift response of airport personnel, stressing that “no intrusion or threat will ever be taken lightly under our watch.”

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) and airport management are expected to review perimeter security protocols following the breach, as aviation authorities emphasized that such incidents highlight vulnerabilities that must be immediately addressed to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
