SAPA-SAPA, Tawi-Tawi – Five individuals were rescued after a small motorboat capsized between Mantabuan and Latuan Islands while en route to Poblacion, Sapa-Sapa, Tawi-Tawi, on Friday morning, August 22, 2025.
The incident occurred at around 11:11 a.m. as the passengers were traveling to attend an Islamic ceremony at the Mindanao State University (MSU) Covered Court in Sapa-Sapa. According to initial reports, the boat was struck by a large wave, causing its front portion to break open, which led to water ingress and eventual capsizing.
The passengers were identified as:
- Abdulbasit L. Ismael
- Alrafy B. Harun
- Abiqatada E. Maring (injured)
- Alsappa L. Gayong (boat operator)
- Botchoy M. Bara
At around 12:00 noon, all individuals were successfully rescued through the swift and coordinated response of the Sapa-Sapa Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), Sapa-Sapa Municipal Police Station, Philippine Marines Oneonetwo Detachment, Recon South Pacific–Sapa-Sapa Chapter, a local government boat, and medical staff from Tuan Ligaddung Lipae Memorial Hospital (TLLMH).
The rescued passengers were immediately brought to TLLMH, where they received medical attention. One of the victims, Abiqatada E. Maring, sustained a stingray injury while in the water awaiting rescue. He was given first aid on-site before further treatment at the hospital.
The incident response was led by the Tawi-Tawi Provincial DRRM Office, in coordination with the Bongao MDRRM Office and other agencies including the Office of Civil Defense–BARMM, the 2nd Marine Brigade, MBLT-4, MBLT-12, Philippine Coast Guard (Central Station and Tandubas Station), Philippine Army, and PNP-SOU Maritime.
Local government officials, led by Mayor Rhodesia M. Sali and Municipal Administrator Rhajil S. Matolo, also extended full support to the rescue efforts. Special acknowledgments were given to MPO Mudzmar H. Nawali and GSO Aisal S. Ingkagan for their invaluable assistance during the operation.
Authorities confirmed that all five victims are safe and are under proper medical care. An investigation has been launched to determine the root cause of the mishap and to enhance maritime safety measures in the area.
