Tawi-Tawi, Philippines – Two staff members of Project Tabang, an initiative under the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), tragically lost their lives after their motorized boat capsized in the waters of Sandoval, Tawi-Tawi.

BARMM Project Tabang Project Manager Abubakar Edris identified the victims as Akram Serilia, a resident of Simuay, Sultan Kudarat, and Moamar Nonongan from Cotabato City. Both individuals were of legal age and dedicated to serving communities through their work.

According to BARMM Project Tabang Project Development Officer-3 Norodin Donton, the team was en route to conduct a medical mission when their boat encountered sudden strong winds, causing it to overturn. Unfortunately, Serilia and Nonongan did not survive the incident.

The BARMM Project Tabang team is currently in the process of transporting the remains of their fallen colleagues back to the mainland.

Official Condolences from the Bangsamoro Board of Investments

The Bangsamoro Board of Investments (BBOI) issued an official statement on February 8, 2025, expressing their deepest sympathies to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased staff members.

“We are profoundly saddened by the loss of these dedicated individuals who selflessly served the Bangsamoro people. Their commitment to providing essential services to even the most remote areas of the region is a testament to their compassion and dedication,” the statement read.

The BBOI acknowledged the invaluable contributions of Project Tabang in delivering vital medical assistance to communities in need. The tragic loss highlights the risks faced by frontline workers in reaching geographically isolated areas.

“We offer our heartfelt prayers and support to the bereaved families during this difficult time. May they find strength and solace in the knowledge that their service made a significant impact on the lives of many,” the BBOI added.

The Bangsamoro community mourns this tragic loss, and the BBOI reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that improve access to BARMM services.

“Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un,” the statement concluded, offering prayers for the departed souls.
