Cotabato City Mayor Bruce Matabalao has filed formal charges of dishonesty, misconduct, and gross neglect of duty against Councilor Hunyn Abu. The allegations stem from Abu’s reported absence during a crucial Philippine Councilors League (PCL) gathering held in Boracay, an event where significant city governance matters were addressed.
The gathering coincided with the regular session of the city council and Mayor Matabalao’s State of the City Address (SOCA), emphasizing its importance in discussing key initiatives and governance strategies. According to Mayor Matabalao, the leadership of the PCL confirmed that Abu did not attend, contrary to the councilor’s claims.
“This absence, coupled with the alleged fabrication of attendance, has serious implications for his role as a councilor. Public service demands integrity and accountability,” the mayor stated, underscoring the importance of transparency and commitment from public officials. He added that Abu’s actions could potentially undermine the governance of Cotabato City.
In response, Councilor Abu denied the allegations in a statement, calling the accusations baseless. He clarified that his travel order, signed by Mayor Matabalao, indicated Palawan, not Boracay, as his official destination. Abu also explained that he initially traveled on June 18 for a June 19 seminar but returned immediately to Cotabato City upon learning that the SOCA would not proceed due to a lack of quorum.
“Serious matters should be addressed through proper venues like the Ombudsman or the courts, not through social media to gain public sympathy. I have enough evidence to prove the truth,” Abu said, emphasizing that he prioritizes his dual responsibilities as an elected councilor and PCL President.
The incident has sparked public interest, with residents urging accountability and calling for a resolution to ensure the integrity of local governance. As the formal complaint progresses, further developments are awaited.
