General Santos City – October 22, 2024
The administration of Mayor Lorelie Pacquiao has come under fire from concerned netizens following the late announcement of class suspensions in the city on Tuesday, amidst heavy rainfall. Many expressed frustration as students were already on their way to school when the city government issued the suspension, which was based on a rainfall advisory from the state weather bureau.
Mayor Pacquiao’s Executive Order No. 39, declaring a suspension of classes at all levels in both public and private schools, was released after 7 a.m., prompting several parents and netizens to voice their discontent.
“Karun pa mu declare nga nangabasa ng studyante dapat gabie pa,” one netizen commented, criticizing the timing of the announcement.
Others echoed similar sentiments, urging the local government unit (LGU) to make earlier notifications. “Please announce the news earlier, as late notifications can create difficulties for students who are already at school,” another user wrote. A parent added, “Request unta sunod mga 6am palang announce na,” reflecting a common desire for timely information to ensure safety.
Many pointed out the logistical challenges caused by the delay. “Nag-aalangan ba ang LGU? Karon pa nag announce na naa na mga bata sa skul… mabasa na to cla pag uli kay gaulan,” expressed another frustrated parent, highlighting the danger of students being stranded in the rain after school.
A collective concern was the welfare of the children caught in the downpour. “Hopefully, our directives from the LGU will be published in a timely manner. Sometimes it’s really disappointing that there’s always a delay. Early morning palang malakas na masyado ang ulan,” shared a parent, emphasizing the need for better communication from the local government. “Many children are already dropped off at school, only to be left stranded because their parents or guardians are still at work.”
As the city grapples with the backlash, many citizens are calling for a more proactive approach to safety announcements, especially when adverse weather conditions are forecasted. Parents and community members are urging local authorities to prioritize timely communication to protect the well-being of students and avoid unnecessary risks during inclement weather.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of early warnings and the responsibility of local governments to ensure the safety of their constituents, particularly vulnerable groups like students. As the community navigates these challenges, the hope remains for improved communication strategies in the future.
