September 11, 2024 – The United Bangsamoro Justice Party (UBJP) has issued a statement expressing deep regret over the Supreme Court’s ruling that detaches the Province of Sulu from the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). The decision has been met with sorrow by the Bangsamoro people, who view Sulu as a crucial part of their identity and history.
In their statement, the UBJP emphasized the significant role that Sulu has played in the Bangsamoro struggle, from the days of armed conflict to the peace negotiations and the establishment of the BARMM. The party acknowledged the Supreme Court’s decision, despite their deep regret, and reiterated their commitment to the rule of law.
The UBJP highlighted the adverse effects of the ruling on the people of Sulu, noting that they will no longer benefit directly from the programs and reforms implemented by the Bangsamoro Government. This includes improvements in the educational system, particularly the strengthening of Madaris education, and the enforcement of anti-political dynasty policies that have been crucial for good governance.
Despite the ruling, the UBJP remains steadfast in its commitment to the Bangsamoro people. The party pledged to continue delivering on its promise of a government that empowers the Bangsamoro to determine its own destiny, founded on peace, justice, and development.
The statement urged the Bangsamoro people not to lose hope, emphasizing that the essence of the Bangsamoro identity transcends administrative boundaries. The UBJP assured that as long as they remain the Government of the Day in BARMM, they will fight for the rights and aspirations of every Bangsamoro, ensuring that Sulu remains connected with the region in spirit and progress.
The UBJP also highlighted the various powers at the Bangsamoro Government’s disposal, including the Inter-Governmental Relations Bodies (IGRBs), inter-LGU cooperation, and its coordinative role over Bangsamoro communities outside BARMM (BCOBAR), to ensure the collective future of the Bangsamoro people within the legal framework of the Philippines.
The statement concluded with a message of solidarity and commitment to the Bangsamoro people: “Bangsamoro, habang buhay kami sa’yo’y magbabantay – mananatili sa puso’t isipan.”
