Manila, Philippines – In a heartfelt message, Bangsamoro Parliament Speaker Atty. Pangalian Balindong expressed deep disappointment over the recent Supreme Court ruling that excludes Sulu from the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). The decision, he said, is a significant setback for the unity and progress of the Bangsamoro people.
“For decades, our hearts have longed for unity, for a Bangsamoro that stands complete and whole—a homeland that embodies our shared history and dreams, a region that honors and recognizes the sacrifices and struggles of every community within it,” Balindong stated.
He emphasized the integral role of Sulu in the Bangsamoro narrative, highlighting the contributions and sacrifices of the Tausug people. “Sulu has always been an irreplaceable part of the Bangsamoro narrative. It has been at the forefront of our movement. The blood shed, the sacrifices made, and the stories of the Tausugs are woven into the heart of the Bangsamoro identity and history,” he said.
Balindong lamented that excluding Sulu diminishes the essence of their shared history and overlooks the indispensable contributions of its people. He acknowledged the challenges ahead, especially with the 2025 elections approaching and critical legislation yet to be finalized. “This decision forces us to confront the challenge of reassessing and redrafting our laws. This is no small challenge, but it is one that we must confront with courage and resolve,” he noted.
The Speaker assured that the Bangsamoro leadership would engage with Sulu’s leaders to address the gaps and work together to create an environment where every Bangsamoro can flourish. He called on his fellow leaders to rise above political differences and remain united in their commitment to the Bangsamoro cause.
“The Bangsamoro people need to see us not just in words but in action—united, dedicated, and deeply committed to their well-being and future,” Balindong urged. He also extended his solidarity to the people of Sulu, reaffirming their unity and shared identity. “To the people of Sulu, know that we stand with you in this trying time. We are, and always will be, one Bangsamoro, one Ummah.”
In closing, Balindong expressed his enduring love and respect for Sulu, saying, “Pag-agaran natu’ halga’an iban lasahun in Lupa’ Sug. (Together, we cherish and love Sulu.)”
This ruling marks a pivotal moment for the Bangsamoro region, as its leaders and people navigate the complexities of this decision and strive to uphold the unity and progress of their homeland.
