ZAMBOANGA CITY — Authorities seized more than ₱1.26 million worth of suspected smuggled cigarettes and arrested several individuals during a joint law enforcement operation at the Port of Zamboanga early Thursday morning, January 22, 2026.

The operation, conducted at around 6:05 a.m., was led by personnel of the PNP Maritime Group under Police Major Benzar Mukarram, in coordination with RMU9 Intelligence and Investigation, Sulu MARPSTA, and the 1st Special Operations Unit–Maritime Group.

According to authorities, the successful interdiction stemmed from heightened port security measures and random baggage inspections following information from a reliable source. During the inspection, operatives discovered several suspicious pieces of luggage containing various brands of cigarettes believed to have been illegally smuggled into the country.

In total, 1,106 reams of suspected smuggled cigarettes were confiscated, with an estimated market value of ₱1,267,476.00.

Further examination revealed that the seized tobacco products lacked the required graphic health warnings, a clear violation of Republic Act No. 10643, also known as the Graphic Health Warnings on Tobacco Products Act. As a result, the individuals involved were immediately placed under arrest.

The suspects, along with the confiscated items, were brought to the Maritime Police Station for proper documentation and in-depth investigation. Authorities said criminal charges are now being prepared against those involved.

The PNP Maritime Group reiterated its warning to the public that the importation, transport, and sale of illegal products are strictly prohibited, stressing that smuggling not only undermines government revenue but also poses serious risks to public health.

Officials assured the public that anti-smuggling operations will continue, particularly in key ports such as Zamboanga City, as part of the government’s broader effort to strengthen port security and protect the welfare of the Filipino people.
