LAMITAN CITY, Basilan — A barangay chairman and his associate were arrested during a routine police patrol in Barangay Malinis on November 28, 2025, after authorities discovered multiple high-powered firearms in their possession without the required documents.

The suspects were identified as Idris Jama Abdulla, 33, barangay chairman of Sangkahan in Albarka Municipality, and Jaid Alasa Amilul, 21, a resident of Lagayas in Tipo-Tipo Municipality.

According to the Lamitan City Police Station under the leadership of PLTCOL Elmer P. Solon, officers flagged down Abdulla as he alighted from a black Toyota Hilux. When asked for verification, Abdulla failed to present documentation for a .45 caliber Armscor pistol loaded with ammunition that he was carrying.

A further search of the vehicle led to the arrest of Amilul, who was found with a Colt MKIV pistol, also undocumented. Police additionally recovered an M16 rifle with loaded magazines inside the vehicle — none of which had proper permits or licenses as required under Republic Act 10591, the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act.

Both Abdulla and Amilul were brought to the Lamitan City Police Station, where they remain in custody pending the completion of documentation. Authorities said the appropriate charges for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition are now being prepared for filing in court.

Police emphasized that the arrests highlight ongoing efforts to curb the proliferation of loose firearms in Basilan and reinforce peace and security across the province.
