Lakewood, Zamboanga del Sur — The small town of Lakewood is grieving the tragic death of a 15-year-old Grade 10 student, identified as Lovely, a resident of Purok 10, Barangay Tubod, who ended her own life on Monday, November 10, 2025.

Lovely’s mother, Lanny, revealed that her daughter had been struggling under the heavy pressures of school. Academic challenges, coupled with her fear of failing or not making the honor roll, weighed heavily on her. Lovely had also asked for a laptop to support her studies, but her family’s limited financial resources made it impossible to fulfill her request. The combination of poverty and academic stress created an overwhelming burden for the young student.

Lanny shared that Lovely had been raising herself emotionally after losing her father at the age of five, leaving Lanny to provide for her alone. The family reported that small domestic conflicts, like a disagreement over a ten-peso coin with her sibling, added to Lovely’s feelings of distress.

Tragically, Lovely hanged herself inside their home using a string meant for poultry. Despite her mother’s immediate attempts to save her, Lovely could not be revived. Authorities confirmed there was no foul play involved, and her body has been prepared for burial by the family.

Local authorities and the Lakewood Rural Health Unit urged parents and guardians to closely monitor their children for signs of emotional distress. They emphasized that financial struggles and school pressures, when combined, can take a heavy toll on young people.

Mental health experts remind everyone: Poverty and academic stress can deeply affect a child’s emotional well-being. It is crucial to create open lines of communication, show empathy, and seek professional help when needed. If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of self-harm, help is available through local health units, school counselors, and mental health hotlines.

Remember: No one has to face life’s pressures alone. Reaching out for support can save a life.
