MALALAG, Davao del Sur — Three men were killed after being buried alive when a portion of soil collapsed during a suspected treasure-hunting excavation in Purok 3, Barangay Ibo, Malalag, around 1:00 p.m. on Monday, November 10, 2025.

Police identified the fatalities as Glenn Eral Sasuman of Lapu-Lapu Extension, Digos City; Nario Hesula Otida of Ruparan, Digos City; and Simaco Sabac Quisaot, 63, of Upper Limonzo, Padada, Davao del Sur.

Initial investigation from the Malalag Municipal Police Station (MPS) revealed that the victims, along with several companions, began digging at the site around 8:00 a.m. allegedly in search of buried treasure. The activity was reportedly organized by a certain alias “Jerson,” a contractor, and alias “John,” the owner of the lot.

At around 1:00 p.m., the soil suddenly gave way, burying the three men inside the excavation pit. Responding personnel from the Malalag MPS, Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), and Barangay Ibo officials immediately conducted retrieval operations that continued until late in the evening.

Authorities have taken the lot owner and the contractor into custody for questioning as investigations continue to determine possible violations of existing laws on treasure hunting and safety regulations.

Police reminded the public against engaging in unauthorized digging activities, stressing that such operations pose grave risks to life and property and are subject to government regulation and permits.

Further details on the incident are still being verified as the investigation continues.
