ZAMBOANGA DEL SUR — What was supposed to be a solemn observance of Kalag-Kalag turned bloody after a farmer was hacked by his younger brother following a heated argument over a bowl of binignit in Barangay Timolan, Tigbao, Zamboanga del Sur.
Police identified the victim as alias “Renato,” 52, a farmer, while the suspect, his younger brother, was identified as alias “Toklis,” 48, both residents of the said barangay.
Initial investigation by the Tigbao Municipal Police Station revealed that the brothers had just returned home from a birthday celebration, both reportedly under the influence of alcohol. Upon arriving, Renato allegedly asked his younger brother for binignit—a traditional sweet dish usually served during Kalag-Kalag—as part of the observance.
However, Toklis reportedly told him that his wife was unable to prepare the delicacy, which angered Renato. The elder brother allegedly punched Toklis, prompting the younger man to retaliate by hacking him with a bolo.
Renato sustained injuries to his arm and shoulder and was immediately rushed to a nearby clinic for treatment. Meanwhile, the suspect fled the scene and remains at large as police continue their hot pursuit operation.
Authorities reminded the public to remain calm and avoid violence, especially during family gatherings and traditional observances meant for remembrance and peace.
