Marawi City, Philippines – In a continuing effort to support those affected by the 2017 Marawi Siege, the Marawi Compensation Board (MCB) disbursed ₱74,346,397.60 to 52 eligible claimants on October 22, 2024. This latest distribution raises the total compensation awarded by the MCB to over ₱767 million since its establishment, delivering much-needed financial assistance to families and individuals who suffered during the conflict.
The MCB was formed under Republic Act 11696, also known as the Marawi Siege Victims Compensation Act of 2022, with the responsibility of adjudicating and compensating claims for those who lost property or loved ones due to the siege. Since its inception, the board has approved compensation claims amounting to a significant total of ₱1,448,260,594.47.
Several recipients expressed deep gratitude for the support, sharing how the compensation will impact their lives. Rohanie, a resident from West Marinaut, expressed heartfelt appreciation upon receiving her compensation. “I am thankful to Allah for blessing us through the MCB,” she said. She plans to use the funds to support her son working abroad to help in rebuilding their home, showing the ripple effect that the compensation will have on her family.
Asniah, a resident of Sagonsongan who claimed death benefits for her late mother, conveyed mixed emotions. While saddened by her mother’s passing, she welcomed the relief the compensation provides, planning to start a small business after addressing outstanding debts. She expressed her gratitude to the government and the MCB for this aid, encouraging fellow claimants to remain patient.
For Johayah, 38, the compensation provided relief after years of uncertainty. She shared that she had initial doubts about the MCB but now appreciates the board’s commitment. “I was unsure if we’d actually receive anything, but now I see their efforts,” she said. She assured other claimants that the process is ongoing and urged patience as the board continues to assess and approve claims.
The Marawi Compensation Board’s ongoing efforts symbolize more than financial relief; they are an important step toward justice and recovery for the city’s residents. Each distribution represents a beacon of hope, allowing many to begin the long process of rebuilding their lives and homes.
As Marawi City moves forward, the compensation program underscores the government’s commitment to aiding affected families and individuals. For these claimants, receiving compensation is more than just financial support; it marks a step toward healing after a long and arduous journey.
